Does Moodle detect AI?

Core Moodle doesn't. Schools can add AI detection through plugins, and teachers can always check work by hand.
Moodle does not detect AI writing out of the box. It is an open-source learning platform, and AI detection only appears if your institution installs a plugin, most often a Turnitin integration, on its assignments.
How Moodle schools add detection
- A Turnitin plugin, which can add an AI writing report if the school licenses it.
- Other plagiarism or originality plugins, depending on the institution.
- Teachers copying submissions into a detector of their choice.
What Moodle logs
Moodle keeps detailed logs: when you viewed an assignment, when you submitted, and for quizzes, attempt timing. These don't reveal AI use, but they give teachers context if a submission looks out of character.
| Setup | Finds copied text | Finds AI writing |
|---|---|---|
| Moodle core | No | No |
| Moodle + Turnitin plugin | Yes | Yes, if licensed |
| Teacher's own detector | No | Yes |
Before you submit
Check your final draft with an AI detector, fix the flagged sentences by adding your own reasoning and examples, and keep your drafts as a record of your process.
Check what a detector would flag before you upload to Moodle.
Check for AICommon questions
Not by itself. Moodle shows AI scores only through a plugin such as Turnitin, if your school has one.
Standard Moodle does not flag pasted text as AI. Logs show activity and timing, not the origin of your words.
The submission page usually mentions Turnitin and shows a similarity report after you submit.
They are only as accurate as the detector behind them. All AI detectors produce estimates and occasional false positives.
