Does SafeAssign detect AI?

No. SafeAssign is a plagiarism checker. But your school may run a separate AI detector alongside it.
SafeAssign does not detect AI writing. It is Blackboard's plagiarism checker: it compares your submission against existing text and reports how much matches. Text generated by ChatGPT or another model is usually original, so it rarely matches anything and passes SafeAssign's check. Anthology, the company behind Blackboard, has chosen to partner with Copyleaks for AI detection rather than build it into SafeAssign.
What SafeAssign compares your paper against
- The public internet.
- Your institution's archive of previously submitted papers.
- The Global Reference Database of papers students have volunteered.
- ProQuest's database of published articles.
Because every source is existing text, SafeAssign can only find copying. It has no model of how AI-generated writing reads, so it cannot tell whether an original paragraph was typed by you or produced by a language model.
So can Blackboard detect AI?
Only if your school adds a separate AI detector. Some Blackboard schools connect Copyleaks, others run Turnitin, and instructors can paste suspicious work into a detector themselves. Many instructors also notice AI text without software: a sudden change in voice, generic examples, or citations that do not exist.

What this means for you
Passing SafeAssign tells you your paper is not copied. It says nothing about whether an AI detector would flag it. If you drafted with AI help, check the final text with an AI detector and rewrite the flagged sentences in your own words before you submit.
