Does Canvas detect AI?

Not on its own. Canvas is a learning platform, and AI detection only appears if your school plugs a detector into it.
Canvas does not detect AI writing by itself. It is a learning management system: it stores assignments, grades and discussions. When a Canvas assignment shows an AI score, that score comes from a separate tool your school has connected, most often Turnitin.
How AI detection gets into Canvas
- Turnitin, connected as an external tool, adds a Similarity report and, if your school licenses it, a separate AI writing report.
- Other detectors can be connected the same way, depending on what your institution pays for.
- Instructors can also copy your submission into any detector they like, outside Canvas entirely.
What instructors can see without a detector
Canvas keeps activity data. Depending on the assignment type, an instructor may see when you opened the page, when you submitted, and for quizzes, a log of activity during the attempt. None of that identifies AI writing, but a long essay pasted in seconds after opening the assignment can prompt questions.
| Source | Shows AI writing? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Canvas alone | No | Activity and submission times only |
| Turnitin in Canvas | Yes, if licensed | Separate AI report next to Similarity |
| Instructor's own detector | Yes | Any tool, outside Canvas |
What to do before you submit
If you used AI anywhere in your process, assume the final text may be checked. Run it through an AI detector, look at which sentences are flagged and why, and rewrite those in your own words with your own examples. Keep drafts and notes: process evidence matters more than any score if a flag is ever questioned.

No. Canvas only shows an AI score if your school connects a detector such as Turnitin to the assignment.
Canvas does not flag pasted text as AI. Activity logs can show timing, and some quiz settings record activity, but that is not AI detection.
Turnitin-enabled assignments usually say so in the submission area and show a report icon after you submit. Ask your instructor if unsure.
It is an estimate. Turnitin itself says the AI indicator should not be the sole basis for action, and false positives happen.
