Does Brightspace detect AI?

Brightspace itself doesn't. Your school may connect a detector to it, and instructors can check your work by hand.
Brightspace, D2L's learning platform, does not detect AI writing on its own. AI scores appear in Brightspace only when your institution connects an originality or AI-detection tool, Turnitin being the most common, to its assignment folders.
Where an AI score would come from
- A Turnitin integration on the assignment folder, which can add an AI writing report if licensed.
- Another originality tool your school has integrated.
- Your instructor running your submission through a detector separately.
What Brightspace does record
Like other learning platforms, Brightspace keeps submission times and course activity. Instructors can see when work was submitted and, in quizzes, details of the attempt. That is not AI detection, but unusual patterns can lead to a conversation.
| Check | Finds copied text | Finds AI writing |
|---|---|---|
| Brightspace alone | No | No |
| Turnitin in Brightspace | Yes | Yes, if licensed |
| Manual check by instructor | Sometimes | Sometimes |
Before you submit
Check your final draft with an AI detector, rewrite the sentences that read as machine-written, and keep your outline and drafts. If you are ever asked about a flag, being able to show how the work developed is the strongest answer.
Know which sentences would be flagged before you upload.
Check for AICommon questions
Not by default. D2L Brightspace shows AI results only if your school connects an AI-detection tool to the assignment.
Many schools connect Turnitin to Brightspace, but it depends on your institution's licence. Your assignment instructions usually say.
Brightspace does not identify AI use. Quiz attempt logs show timing and activity, not where answers came from.
Ask which tool produced the score, share your drafts and notes, and explain your process. Detector scores are estimates and are known to misfire.
