Heavy em-dash use is not proof of anything, plenty of good writers lean on them. What is a signal is a sudden change: if your past writing uses two em dashes per thousand words and a new draft uses fourteen, something changed. That is what Style DNA measures.

The checker reports your em-dash rate alongside semicolon frequency, question frequency and contraction rate, and compares them against your own fingerprint if you have built one. Your baseline is the only meaningful comparison, there is no universal correct rate.

FAQ

Not on its own. Detectors weigh many signals, and punctuation is a minor one. The meme overstates it considerably.

No. Removing punctuation you would naturally use makes your writing less like you, which is the opposite of the goal.

There is no universal figure. Build a Style DNA from your own past writing and compare against that.

The writing analysis and your Style DNA run in your browser. For a real AI score, the text you check is sent to an AI-detection provider, and we never store it. When you rewrite on a paid plan, the draft is sent to our server, rewritten and sent back without being stored. AI features (rewriting, humanizing and Copilot) send the text to Cloudflare Workers AI, which processes it and doesn't keep it.
