How to make AI writing sound human
By Sourabh Singh11 October 20266 min read

Change the rhythm, add specifics only you would know, and cut the stock phrases. Synonym swaps don't work.
AI writing sounds machine-made because of a few predictable habits, not because of any single word. Fix those habits and the text sounds like a person wrote it. Swapping words for synonyms rarely helps, because the rhythm and structure stay the same.
9 edits that make AI text sound human
- Vary sentence length: follow a long sentence with a short one.
- Cut stock openers like 'In today's world' and start with your point.
- Replace 'moreover', 'furthermore' and 'additionally' with plain links, or nothing.
- Swap abstract claims for a specific example, number or name.
- Add something only you know: a class discussion, a personal experience, a source you read.
- Use contractions where you'd say them out loud.
- Take a position instead of balancing every point.
- Delete the summary sentence at the end of each paragraph.
- Read it aloud and rewrite anything you wouldn't actually say.
Before and after
| AI version | Human version |
|---|---|
| In today's fast-paced world, technology plays a pivotal role in education. | Most of my classes now run through a laptop, for better and worse. |
| Moreover, students must navigate the complexities of online learning. | Online classes are harder to stay focused in, at least for me. |
| Ultimately, it is important to strike a balance. | The fix isn't less tech. It's clearer rules about when to use it. |
Check your edits
After editing, run the text through an AI detector that shows which sentences are still flagged and why. That tells you exactly where to keep working, instead of guessing.
See which sentences still sound like AI, then rewrite them in your voice.
Humanize my textCommon questions
Vary sentence length, cut stock transitions, add specific details and personal examples, and take a clear position.
A little. It still writes toward a generic idea of human writing, so editing in your own details matters more.
Rarely. They keep the same rhythm and structure that make text read as AI, and often make it worse to read.
That depends on your school or employer's policy. Check the rules, and be ready to explain your process.
