GPTZero review
By Sourabh Singh18 September 20265 min read

The most recognised name in AI detection, measured against what it can actually tell you.
GPTZero is the detector most people have heard of: 4,517,328 US organic visits a month across 7,326 ranking keywords, backed by 10,498 referring domains. In this category, that is as close to a default as it gets.
What it does well
- A usable free tier that does not demand a card up front.
- Sentence-level highlighting, which most competitors do not offer at all.
- Clear, fast interface with no dark patterns.
- Enough brand weight that an institution will accept it as a second opinion.
Where it falls short
Like every detector it produces false positives, and it inherits the category-wide bias against non-native English writing. Highlighted sentences come without an account of which signal fired, so a flagged writer still cannot tell whether the problem is rhythm, predictability or stock phrasing.
Is the paid tier worth it?
For volume and API access, yes. For checking your own work, no, the free tier answers the same question, and paying does not make the underlying measurement more reliable.
Verdict
A good free detector and a reasonable second opinion. Not a source of truth, and not a tool that helps you fix anything. Its sentence highlighting is the right instinct, one explanation short of being genuinely useful.
Same highlighting, with the reason attached.

Only for volume and API access. Paying does not make the underlying measurement more reliable, so individuals checking their own writing do not need it.

No. It highlights sentences, which most competitors do not, but it does not say which signal fired. A flagged writer cannot tell whether the problem is rhythm, predictability or stock phrasing.
